Wanda Stewart Obituary

Wanda Sue Stewart (Allen), age 76, passed away peacefully in her home on February 13, 2026 in Monticello, Georgia.

Wanda was born at home on March 12, 1949 to Irene and William Allen of Neon, Kentucky. In a time before NICUs, Wanda started life as a tiny four-pound baby; her mother placed her in a shoe box on the stove in the family’s kitchen for warmth. This rough start may explain why there was always a little bit of fight in her. Wanda’s zest for life persisted throughout her childhood, with some of her fondest memories of growing up in Kentucky being her time twirling baton and cheerleading. It was this innate joy for living that caught the eye of a young Lonnie Stewart, also of Neon, who went on to become Wanda’s husband after eloping with her (They were married by the Justice of the Peace in the Pound Hardware store in January of 1965). The couple moved to Georgia, where they spent 61 years together, producing four beautiful children and building a life and legacy that will endure far beyond their time on this earth.

Over the years Wanda enjoyed various activities, but none more than spending time with family. Wanda once stated that being a mother was her “greatest accomplishment.” Whether it be at the pool, the lake, camping, or playing cards in the homes of relatives, she was at her happiest when surrounded by family. On Sundays she could be found in the congregation of the local Church of Christ and was also a proud member of TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Successfully), having earned the esteem of becoming a KOPS (Keeping Off Pounds Successfully). In later years she spent most of her time reading, cooking, and canning vegetables from her garden. Sitting on the porch was also a favored pastime, and Wanda loved watching the seasons change from her rocking chair on the porch, book in hand. Her favorite time of year was when the jonquils bloomed, because that meant that warmer  weather was coming.

Wanda is survived by her husband of 61 years, Lonnie Stewart, their four children, Timothy (Lisa) Stewart, Carolyn (Bradley) McAlister, Scott (Cynthia) Stewart, and Rusty (Amanda) Stewart,  grandchildren Loni Danielle Foster, Emily Brown, Zachary Stewart (Kimberly), Harlow McAlister, Stephen Stewart (Amanda), Lauri Stewart (Edgar Maldonado), Tamara Stewart-Maughon (Timothy), Sarah Stewart, Caitlin McAlister, Ethan Stewart, Mary Stewart, and Nathan Stewart, great-grandchildren Isaiah Foster (Isabelle), Marvin Foster, Laila Foster, Cayson Stewart, Oliver Stewart, Marcelo Maldonado Stewart, Gabriel Maldonado Stewart, Adrian Maldonado Stewart, Angelo Maldonado Stewart, Amelia Maughon, Jameson Stewart, Cheyenne Kucsma and three great-great grandchildren Evangelina Foster, Koa Foster, and Carolina Foster, sisters Rachelle (Allen) Stanley and Jadina (Allen) Damron, and brother Lewis Swanager, as well as several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Wanda lived her life in service to her husband, children, and family, and by them she will be sorely missed.
“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” ~ Proverbs 31:28
