Unis (Brantley) Hughes

On January 2, 2021, Unis B. Hughes loving wife and passionate mother of two sons, passed away at the age of 84.

Unis was born on October 17, 1936 in Athens, TN. She received her business degree from a local business school in Athens, TN. Thereafter, she moved to Washington, D.C. to work for a lawyer with the Department of Agriculture. She made her way back to Athens to work for Seaton Metal Co. After a few years, she moved to Atlanta, GA to work for American Express. This is where she met and married Lawrence Rhyne Hughes on April 27, 1962. After some time, she started to work for East Marietta Drug Co. as their bookkeeper. Unis ended her career as a bookkeeper working for several tax services in the Marietta and Acworth areas.

She raised two phenomenal sons, Lawrence Edwin Hughes, and Robert Rhyne Hughes. Unis had a passion for creating flower arrangements to sell at local craft shows. Many of the arrangements she made to give to her family and friends. She loved to listen and dance to Elvis Presley music. She was known for her caring and giving heart. Unis loved to host and attend family gatherings for birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. She enjoyed cooking for all them. She even taught her son Edwin how to make many of her favorite Thanksgiving foods. Edwin loved most her special chocolate pies. Unis loved the hope that Christmas brought to her each year. She and her brother, Emerson, would go and cut down a tree which Unis would decorate with old Christmas cards even when there were no gifts to place under the tree. She was always very family orientated and loved to visit her brothers. She spent time traveling with her son Robert and his family especially at Christmas to go see the Rockettes in Nashville.

Unis was preceded in death by her father, George Hasten Brantley her mother Ovia Belle Miller Brantley and younger brother Troy. She is survived by her husband Lawrence (Larry) Rhyne Hughes, her brothers Dewey Brantley and Emerson Brantley, and her twin brother Onis Brantley; her sons Lawrence Edwin Hughes and Robert R. Hughes, her grandchildren Brantley Anne Hughes and Cameron Alexander Hughes. In addition, her daughters-in-laws Laura B. Hughes and Lisa G. Hughes, several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at 2p, The Grove Church, 1605 Mars Hill Rd. Acworth, GA. 30101. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1p until 2p.
