Stephen Louis Ott, age 69, born June 6, 1955, in Decatur, Georgia, passed away at his home on May 1, 2025.
Stephen attended Lakeside High School, where he was both a class clown and a standout athlete. His 1973 yearbook captured his spirit perfectly: “The Comic…a crowd pleaser…Olympics '76…jump…everyone loves a clown.” He poured his energy into track and field, especially the high jump, earning a scholarship to the University of Florida. While at Florida, Stephen won the SEC high jump title in 1977 and had the opportunity to compete alongside Olympic bronze medalist Dwight Stones. In 2020, he was inducted into the Lakeside High School Sports Hall of Fame.
After college, Stephen transitioned from athletics to a successful and decades-long career in insurance sales. Beginning at the brokerage firm, Merritt & McKenzie, his natural charisma, competitive spirit, and sharp business instincts quickly set him apart. He went on to establish Ott & Co., founded on his belief in building strong relationships with an unshakable commitment to doing right by his clients. Stephen eventually sold the company to BB&T where he became Vice President of Insurance Services. He continued to thrive professionally, earning widespread respect and recognition for his integrity, leadership, and mentorship. Stephen remained engaged in his work and his professional community — a testament to his unwavering drive and the pride he took in every role he held.
Stephen married Cynthia “Cindy” Ott in 2012, and together they built a joyful, blended family. He was endlessly proud of and loved his children: Stephen Louis Ott, Jr. (Kathy), Julia Ott Berg (Lee), his stepson James Earl Elliott, III “Jay” (Ferrell), and his adopted daughters, Wesley Katherine Tucker and Lindsay Elizabeth Nell Tucker. He was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren: Elouise Lowe Berg, Walker Ingram Berg, Stephen “Rowe” Ott, Loucile “Lawson” Elliott, and Pierce “Fletcher” Elliott. He is also survived by his brother Keith Ott (Kathy). He leaves behind his two loyal dogs, Henry and Forrest, as well as a wide circle of extended family, friends, and colleagues who will forever miss his vibrant presence.
Stephen was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Patricia McManmon Ott and Bob Harvey Ott, and his older brother, Bob Ott, Jr.
Stephen was a man of deep faith and a devoted member of North Point Community Church, where he found connection, purpose, and comfort in the services and community around him. He also felt especially close to God during family trips to Pawleys Island, South Carolina — his favorite place to relax, reflect, and soak in the quiet beauty of the coast. Stephen had a magnetic personality — full of humor, warmth, and rhythm. He had an uncanny ability to make people laugh, feel seen, and feel at home, whether you were a lifelong friend or someone he’d just met. A natural entertainer, Stephen was known to grab the drumsticks at any party with a drum kit, with “Mustang Sally” as his signature tune — turning any gathering into a celebration. His deep love of music was matched by his love of storytelling, mischief, and meaningful conversation. Stephen lit up every room he entered, not just with his quick wit, but with his generosity of spirit, his loyalty, and his joy in bringing people together. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, connection, and love that will be felt for generations.
A private graveside service for family will be held on Saturday, May 10, at Arlington Cemetery. All who knew and loved Stephen will be invited to celebrate his life and share memories at a Celebration of Life event to be held in June at the Golf Club of Georgia. Details to follow.
