Phyllis Evangeline Landreth Jarvis, of Cumming, GA, passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, October 20, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by loved ones. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
Phyllis was born in Birmingham, AL on November 3, 1942, to the late Eugene and Lola Landreth. She was also preceded in death by her brother Gene Michael Landreth. She is survived by her sister, Eugenia (the late Jim) Morgan and her brother, Jim (Cheryl) Landreth, of Birmingham, AL. She is also survived by her loving daughter Deborah Heard, sons Steve (Beth) Jarvis, Lee (Lucy) Jarvis, and Jack (Michele) Jarvis; her grandchildren, Thad (Madison) Jarvis, Taylor (Amanda) Jarvis, Nora (Chase) Heard Weaver, Bailey (Barry) Watson, and Zoe Heard; and her great-grandchild Kyro Weaver.
After graduating from Hueytown Highschool, she began work with South Central Bell in Birmingham. She transferred to Southern Bell in Cumming, GA when she and her late husband, Jack Jarvis Sr. moved to Georgia with their 4 children in 1974. She was a service rep, achieving several awards during her tenure, and loved the people she worked with very much.
She was a great cook, always making sure her 3 growing boys had plenty to eat, which meant her daughter Deborah had to push one of the two shopping carts to help her buy groceries every week! She was also known to sneak a trip to McDonalds to buy her youngest a cheeseburger if he wouldn’t eat what she had cooked. Her sister was her best friend, and she treasured the years she worked with her brother Jim at his nursery taking care of the flowers. She enjoyed the beach, watching the ocean and sitting on the porch. She had a wry sense of humor and was always good for a laugh.
But the greatest joy of her life was her faith. She read the Bible to her children and loved going to church when she was able and was always singing. Once she couldn’t attend church anymore, she turned to watching Jimmy Swaggart on TV – all day long, as loud as it could be, so she could hear it well. There was always preaching and singing coming from her room in her home. In her last hospital stay, she proudly declared to the chaplain “Jesus is my Savior!”
She was not only a beautiful mother to her children but the best friend. She will be greatly missed, but we are assured that we will see her again in her new home in Heaven. And we know she’ll be singing.
Her family will receive friends on Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 11:30 to 12:30 followed immediately by a memorial service at Republic Baptist Church, 1552 Republic Rd, Birmingham, AL 35214. At the conclusion of the service, Phyllis will be laid to rest in Bivens Chapel Cemetery, 1086 Bivens Chapel Rd, Birmingham, AL.
Flowers can be received by the church on Saturday morning only. Condolences may be sent to 6340 John Orr Dr, Cumming, GA 30040.
