Margaret Mary Marshall, of Okatie, SC, a beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home in Sun City Hilton Head on Monday, October 14, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and creativity. Born on December 8, 1935, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Margaret’s life was defined by her unwavering faith, passion for education, irrepressible sense of humor, and love for her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Richwein Shafer and Marie Magdalena (Dotterweich) Shafer, and her brother, John Richwine Shafer. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Wendy Joan Marshall of Okatie, SC; her son, Mark John Marshall of Murray, UT; and her beloved grandchildren: Alexia Jolie Marshall of Austin, TX; Jenny Lee Marshall and John Connor Marshall of Salt Lake City, UT.
Margaret is also survived by her sister, Joan (Shafer) Chesin of Alpharetta, GA; her niece, Anne Margaret Shafer of Boardman, OH; and nephews David John Shafer of Sarasota, FL, and Grant Ashley Chesin of Alpharetta, GA. Additionally, she leaves behind her loving ex-husband, John Francis Marshall, and her cherished Eskimo Spitz dog, Molly.
Margaret always spoke nostalgically about her childhood growing up in the country, where she created countless memories exploring the beauty of nature alongside her beloved brother, John. Their adventures down by the creek and the laughter shared at the one-room schoolhouse they both attended across the street forged a bond that lasted them a lifetime.
She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education from Slippery Rock State University in 1961 and later obtained her Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology from Potsdam State University. Her teaching career began as an elementary school art teacher in Grove City, PA, where she inspired countless children across five schools (K-6). She also taught high school art at Norwood/Norfolk High School in New York.
As a dedicated high school art teacher, Margaret left an indelible mark on her students. One such student, Luanne, came into Margaret’s classroom at a critical time in her life. Struggling with personal challenges, Luanne found in Margaret not just a teacher, but a mentor and a friend. Margaret took Luanne under her wing, teaching her the beauty of pottery and introducing her to the comfort of faith. Under Margaret’s gentle guidance, Luanne found a new path and has remained an active member of her church ever since. Their bond of friendship, forged over 40 years ago, has endured the test of time. Luanne flew in from NY to visit her twice recently, just prior to her passing.
Born with a free spirit, Margaret danced her way through life—literally and figuratively. During the disco era, she could often be found on the dance floor, letting the rhythm of the music move her. Her love of music extended to soft rock, where the melodies of Air Supply often filled her home. Margaret had a playful crush on quarterback Aaron Rodgers, blending her love of football and joy for life in the most charming way. She was a true connoisseur of the simple pleasures, whether it was exploring the best local spots for lunch or sharing a good conversation over a meal. A talented artist, Margaret’s beautiful Japanese Sumi paintings adorned her home, showcasing just one of her many talents.
As the wife of a University Vice President, she took great pride in organizing and planning special events for the college, leaving a lasting impact on the community. She was also dedicated to mentoring future educators, supervising student teachers at several universities, including Potsdam State University, the University of Hartford, University of NC/Wilmington, and Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Her legacy includes Marshall Park, a park in Potsdam, NY, named after and dedicated to her and her husband, a testament to the impact she had on her community. Her love for animals was profound, especially for her four beloved Eskimo Spitz dogs: Lady, Maggie, Dixie, and Molly.
Living in San Francisco from 1971 to 1974 was a highlight of her life, a period she often recalled with fondness. The vibrant culture, beautiful Golden Gate Park, and stunning landscapes of the city left an indelible mark upon her heart.
She also found great joy escaping to her lakefront condo on Lake Norman, where she spent time boating and riding on her jetski. The serene waters were a source of happiness and relaxation for her. While residing in Wilmington, NC, she loved being out in her boat, cruising along the Intercoastal Waterway with friends, creating countless memories on the water.
Margaret had a special place in her heart for classic westerns and war movies, often losing herself in the captivating storylines and rich characters that filled the screen. Her love for film was matched only by her passion for decorating homes. A gifted interior designer, she took both joy and satisfaction in buying and restoring houses, transforming them into warm and welcoming spaces.
She embraced her role as a grandmother with open arms, especially when she stepped up to help raise her sweet, adopted granddaughter, Alexia. The bond between them was instant and profound, as both shared a natural artistic talent and a joyful spirit. Together, they spent countless moments being silly, laughing, and creating beautiful memories that will live on forever.
Her faith as a lifelong Christian Scientist was central to her life, and she was a devoted member of the Plainfield Christian Science Church Independent in NJ. Margaret wrote and published a collection of 100 true stories about children who were healed through prayer, along with a book of Bible lessons for Sunday School teachers.
She is survived by her loving family, who will carry forward her spirit of generosity, creativity, and faith. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Eskimo Rescuers United American Eskimo Dog Rescue, Inc., PO Box 32547, Pikesville, MD 21282-9998, or online at eskierescuers.org.
Margaret’s light will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be dearly missed, but forever remembered.
A celebration of her life will be upcoming (date TBD), and once scheduled, all are welcome to join in and honor her memory.
