Louis “Lou” “Bub” “Dad” “Pop” “Uncle Bubba” Mayer (August 12, 1928 – November 21, 2019) was a native of Birmingham, Alabama. Louis left high school a year early to join the Army and serve in World War II. During the war, he was deployed to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska, the location of the battle of the Aleutian Islands. Until the end of the war, Lou served on Adak Island. For his wartime service, Lou earned a Victory Medal. After the war, Lou returned to Birmingham where he met the love of his life, Lorene, at a dance. They married in 1949 and that was the beginning a beautiful love story, spanning over 70 years.

While attending Howard College (now known as Samford College) in Birmingham alongside his brother, Jack, the two brothers shared a full time job in the food brokerage business. They became known as the “AM and PM Mayers.” Lou graduated with a degree in Business Administration and began his career. He worked with R.T. French’s earning the title of National Sales Manager. Over time, Lou worked with several other businesses before starting his own company, “Southern Sales Force,” a food brokerage business. Southern Sales Force earned a great reputation in the South, and later the company developed a specialty in natural foods through its subsidiary, “Main Street Marketing.” Lou retired from the business at age 80 to enjoy time with his wife and family. Over the years, he and his growing family lived in Birmingham, AL; Memphis, TN; Rochester, NY and Atlanta, GA.

For many years, Lou enjoyed tending to his garden with its assortment of vegetables and fruit trees. Like his father, he was an avid wood-worker worker who built furniture and created many unique birdhouses. Several of his birdhouses earned “ArtFest Awards” in the Habitat for Humanity Birdhouse Competition. Recently, one of his favorite activities was going to PDK airport and watching airplanes take off and land. He loved the water and would went on many beach trips with the family. Lou and Lorene were active members in Rehoboth Baptist Church in Tucker, GA for some 40 years. Most of all, he treasured his wife and his family. Lou died quietly Thursday night in the arms of his loving wife who never left his side. He leaves his wife, Lorene; a brother, Jack from Greenville, SC; a brother, Frank and his wife, Margot, from Birmingham, as well as, six children: son, Bill and his wife, Lee; son, Bob and his wife, Elaine; daughter, Mel Ferris and her husband R.O.; son, Dick; daughter, Sue Hankins and her husband, John; and daughter, Lori Miles and her husband, Phillip. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren to whom he is affectionately known as “Pop”: Jason, Jen (Adrian), Brooke (Brad), Lindsey (Jonathan), Max, Robert, Jennifer, David, Greta (Jason), Mick, Patrick, Elle, Leslie, Michele, Eric, Matthew (Liz), and Michael, and 17 great-grandchildren: Forest (Victoria), Zak, Dash, Ava, Charlie, Mason, Evelyn, Max, Stone, Addie, Emma, Davis, Jack, Haley, Jolene, Benjamin, and Charlotte. He was preceded in death by one great-grandchild, Olivia Anne.

The family is exceedingly grateful to the staff at Seasons Hospice and Synergy Homecare for the care they provided to Lou and to the Fowler YMCA instructors and volunteers in the Parkinson’s Movement classes.

The family will receive visitors Monday, November 25, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Rehoboth Baptist Church, 2997 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker, GA. A graveside service with military honors will be held Monday, November 25, 2019 at 2:00p, Floral Hills Memory Gardens, 3150 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker, GA across the street from the church at 2:00 PM. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to: FODAC- Friends of Disabled Adults and Children, and the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Flowers may be delivered to the church Monday prior to the visitation.
