Lorene Mayer (1930-2024)
It is with great sorrow that the family of Lorene Mayer announces her passing on July 25, 2024. She was born on August 12, 1930 and would have been 94 years old on her birthday. Lorene died quietly and peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones. She was truly a Southern lady, small in stature with a huge heart.
Lorene was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama and attended Woodlawn High School where she graduated two years early. Birmingham is where she met the love of her life, Lou “Bub” Mayer at a post WWII community dance. After a yearlong courtship, they eloped, were married and spent 72 anniversaries together. Clearly meant to be together, they even shared the same birthday and enjoyed 73 celebrations.
During their life together, she and Lou lived in Birmingham, Memphis, Rochester NY and Atlanta. In the 70’s, she and Lou started a business where they both worked until they retired. Over the years, they were always very active in their churches and Rehoboth Baptist Church would become their final church home where she would often be found in Sunday school or taking care of babies in the nursery.
Lorene, “Mom” and “Memaw” embodied a huge, bright, loving soul with endless energy which she shared along with her faith to all. Her cooking was legendary which included favorites such as her famous biscuits, pot roast, Lane cake, pecan pie and chocolate sheet cake. She had an incredible, tireless joy for life, church and family. She loved everyone, especially babies. She loved watching the Braves and football especially Alabama (“roll tide!”).
She was preceded in death by her husband Lou and her great-granddaughter, Olivia Anne Hellwig.
Lorene is survived by: her six children Bill Mayer (Lee), Bob Mayer (Elaine), Mel Ferris (RO), Dick Mayer, Sue Hankins (John) and Lori Miles (Phillip); seventeen grand-children, Jason Mayer, Jen Mayer Kulp (Adrian), Brooke Mayer Hellwig (Brad), Lindsey Mayer Trost (Jonathan), Max Mayer, Robert Fisher, Jennifer Ferris Herkommer (Dominick), David Ferris, Greta Mayer Efferson Jason), Mick Mayer, Patrick Mayer, Elle Mayer, Leslie Marie Villanueva (Francisco), Michele Hankins, Eric Hankins (Kirby), Mathew Miles (Liz) and Michael Miles; twenty great-grandchildren, Forest Mayer (Victoria), Zak Mayer, Dash Mayer, Ava Kulp, Charlie Kulp, Mason Kulp, Evelyn Kulp, Max Hellwig, Stone Hellwig, Addie Hellwig, Emma Trost, Davis Trost, Jack Trost, Wells Trost, Haley Garrett Enderle (Lee), Chiara Herkommer, Jolene Efferson and Benjamin Efferson, Quinn Hankins and Charlotte Miles, and three great-great-grandchildren Calliope Mayer, Lydia and Nyla Enderle. She is also survived many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family is exceedingly grateful for the conscientious loving caregivers and her personal trainer who provided her with amazing care.
