Obituary

We mournfully announce the passing of Lawrence “Larry” Rhyne Hughes Jr., 88, of Kennesaw, GA. Larry passed away on September 17, 2023, after a hard-fought battle with COPD.

Larry was born on August 28, 1935, to Lawrence Rhyne Sr. and Mary Hughes in Horse Cave, KY. After attending Caverna High School in Horse Cave, KY. Larry served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Frank E. Evans DD-754, USS Carl A. Weeden DE-797, and USS Hanna DE-449. He then became a pipe fitter for the Plumbers, Pipefitters and HVACR Technicians Local 72. In 1962, he married Unis Brantley, going on to have 2 sons, Lawrence Edwin Hughes and Robert Rhyne Hughes.

After retiring, Larry spent his time fishing, doing yard work, and spending time with his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed playing cards with friends on Fridays. He had many fond memories of attending yearly family reunions at the Cartmill Farm in Woodburn, KY. Larry was an avid sports fan. He was an Atlanta Braves fan along with rooting for the Kentucky Wildcats. In the later years, he started to root for the Georgia Bulldogs due to his granddaughter, Brantley, attending UGA for her bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences and continuing to her Doctor of Pharmacy degree at UGA. His grandson, Cameron, is a Civil Project Designer for a firm in Holly Springs, Georgia. Larry was continually proud of both his grandchildren’s accomplishments.

Larry was proceeded in death by his father Lawrence R. Sr. Hughes, his mother Mary Cartmill Hughes, and his wife Unis Brantley Hughes. He is survived by his brother Donald “Donnie” Lee Hughes and sister Nancy H. Goldsmith, both of Kentucky; his sons Lawrence Edwin Hughes (wife Lisa) of Canton, Georgia and Robert Rhyne Hughes (wife Laura) of Adairsville, Georgia and his grandchildren Cameron Alexander Hughes, and Brantley Anne Hughes. In addition, several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be conducted on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at 11:00a at The Grove Church Cemetery, 1605 Mars Hill Rd. Acworth, GA 30101.
