Larry Mattis, 77, of Lilburn, GA passed away on August 16, 2024 after a two plus year fight with leukemia. His care team at Winship brightened this time, bringing support and laughter along the way.
Larry was born and raised in Michigan, the oldest son of Doris and Richard Mattis and sibling to Dennis (and Jeanne, both now passed), Dale (and Barb), and Laura.
He met his wife of 57 years Rae Lynne (Crosby) at 19; always appreciating humor, they married on April Fool’s Day while he was on leave from the Navy. Following service, he returned to Michigan where he worked for Tecumseh Products. The family followed his career in HVAC to Atlanta, GA where they remained. Larry worked for Parker Hannifin, traveling throughout the Southeast until he retired.
Larry was well loved. He is survived by his wife, Rae Lynne, daughters Lisa (of CO) and Shanna (of Tucker), daughter-in-law Tammy (Bates), and grandson Jason Bates Mattis who hung the moon for Larry and would call to chat while walking to a friend’s house. Larry relished those calls; he couldn’t wait to hear what happened in Jason’s world that day.
Larry will be greatly missed by many people. He lived a life of service to others, showing authenticity and responsibility in his relationships. While he traveled earlier in life for work, in retirement he thrived on stability, connection, and meaningful friendship. He volunteered at church, helped organize a roving lunch group for retired men, supported others in recovery over 27 years, and served as Mr. Logistics in any home renovation or stained glass project devised by his wife or daughter Shanna. He would be proud to know he was described as “a dad to everyone” by his daughter’s friends.
In honor of the summers he worked on his uncle’s Michigan farm and felt the most peace, Larry refurbished a rusted out 1951 Farmall tractor which he used to pull the preschool float in the Inman Park Festival for over 20 years. The annual parade was a highlight in his life. His face shone with joy, pride and contentment as he waved to parade watchers.
The family invites members of the community to join us for a celebration of life on Saturday, September 14, 2024 at 11:00am at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta, GA.
Charitable donations in his honor will be welcomed by the Boyce Ansley School (https://theansleyschool.org) and Crossroads Community Ministries (https://crossroadsatlanta.org).
Although he fought it sometimes, he modeled a life of growth and change in all aspects. His life remained true to his catch phrase: Plan your work and work your plan. - a life nicely done, Lar. We’ll miss you.
