John Tarkington Sr. Obituary

John “Booth” Tarkington, Sr., born in Memphis, TN on March 6, 1939, passed away on December 22, 2021.

During Booth’s younger years, he served seven years in the Air National Guard. After twenty-five years, he retired from ExxonMobil as the National Distribution Manager in Houston, TX.  Eighteen years ago, Booth moved to Woodstock, GA to share the remainder of his life with his daughter and family.

He was a devoted and loyal father, grandfather, friend, and employee.  He often offered an appropriate joke, frequently poking fun at himself, evoking smiles and laughter from his family and friends.  A couple of our most reminisced jokes within our family was when he referred to himself as “your humble servant” or would sign off “at your service.” One of his favorite hobbies was fishing and enjoyed fishing in Mississippi with his son and friends. Booth was named a 1957 All Memphis football player for Messick High School and had a lifelong love of watching college and NFL football.  He was inspired by gospel music and was an avid listener.

Booth is survived by his son, John “Booth” Tarkington, Jr. (Mandy), daughter, Stephanie Shaw (Thomas), four grandchildren, Jennifer Ohlendorf, Ryan Shaw, Andrew Shaw, and Willoughby Babb, great grandchildren, Eli Ohlendorf and Easton Ohlendorf, his cousin, Ann Barrows, and close friends, Kathy and Jim Chappell.

A private Celebration of Life Luncheon will be held at Brookwood Grill’s Magnolia Room in Roswell, GA on February 5, 2022 at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Booth’s memory to our dear friend, Chrystal Werner  https://www.gofundme.com/f/a-heart-for-chrystal/donate

Chrystal Werner is a beautiful mother of four who suffered permanent heart damage (12% current heart function) with the birth of her last child nearly 8 years ago. She spends every moment of her life patiently waiting to receive the heart transplant that will inevitably prolong her life.
