Obituary
Jean Marie Winkeler, age 68, passed away on November 28, 2022. She was born in Charleston, South Carolina to the late Joseph and Barbara Winkeler. Jean received her teaching degree from Radford College. She taught in the Newport News, Virginia Public Schools for 34 years and was the Division-wide Teacher of the Year in 1999. As a teacher, she touched countless lives with her passion for learning, her love of reading, and her respect for children. Jean was active for years with Relay for Life and later with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
Nothing was more important to her than her family and she loved her role as “Auntie Jean” to her nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sister, Jo Ann Winkeler Vines, brother, Joseph Anthony Winkeler Jr, sister-in-law Pamela Winkeler, brother-in-law Bobby Vines, two nephews (Samuel Vines and Joseph Winkeler III), four nieces (Barbara (Vines) Shanahan, Ashley Winkeler, Allison Winkeler, and Amber (Winkeler) Atkisson), a great-niece and a great-nephew.
Jean requested she not have a funeral or memorial service, and asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
