James Roy Martin passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Monday, November 25, 2024.
Roy was born January 15, 1944, he was 80 years old. Roy’s parents Glenn and Lucille Martin and their other children Clarence, Shannon and Thomas made their home in the Hopewell Community in Alpharetta, Georgia. In later years during high school, Roy met the love of his life, Shirley (Strickland) and in May 1963 they were married. Roy and Shirley had a son, Scott and a daughter, Kay. Roy was a loving husband and great provider for his family, the best Dad and the most awesome Papa to his grandchildren, Jerny and Leda.
Roy made his living as a butcher and later the meat department manager where he finished his career at Food Giant in Alpharetta. During those days as well, he cleaned carpet on his days off and cut many elderly Alpharetta residents yards and helped them around their homes. He cut trees down for folks that were half his age. He ended his working career for his brother Thomas at Four Seasons Heating and Air, at the beginning of work there he ran gas lines and retired as the shop man. Roy was a believer, a Christ Follower and an active member of Bethany Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and for a time was the chairperson of the deacon board. He spent many hours before and after church and during the week working at the church, doing anything that needed to be done. Roy was a coach all thru his years and later in life was able to coach his granddaughter, Leda at Free Home Elementary in basketball. He greatly supported Jerny and Leda in anything they had going on – school events, chorus, plays, ball games and daily life.
Roy was a prayerful, kind, always ready to help, loving, hard working, family lover, Christian and all around good man. He never wanted attention to himself, he was humble and selfless. Roy’s life took a turn 3 + years ago with memory loss and soon the diagnosis of dementia. Still as he battled the disease, he remained kind and loving, his demeanor was so pleasant. Dementia took away the person we all knew earthly as husband, dad, father-in-law, papa and friend. Roy did not walk or talk much for the last year and half of his life. He did not know us for a very long time but we were always familiar. We knew him and continued loving and caring for him, still in the same ways as before his sickness but additionally in many new, caregiving and loving ways.
