Jack Lamar Smith

Mr. Jack Lamar Smith, age 86 of Buford, GA passed away peacefully on November 30, 2019 at his home. Jack, "Dad", "Granddaddy", "Pirate Jack" was born on March 4, 1933 in Happy Hill, AL to Theodore and Nicie Zula Smith. He was born at home after his mother picked cotton in the fields all day.

Jack graduated from Smith High School in Atlanta, GA in 1952 where he was a star football player. He was drafted into the Army a year later during the Korean War and was stationed in Oklahoma. After serving, he returned to Atlanta to start working at Allied Chemical. Years later he became a home builder, then building inspector for Dekalb County and ended his career as Director of Public Works for Dekalb County.

In 1953, Jack married his high school sweetheart Myra Bransford, whom he met on a blind date at his senior prom. They just celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on October 23, 2019.

Jack was preceded in death by his sister Bobbie Stewart, son Daniel Alan and great-granddaughter Hallie Lynn. He leaves behind his wife Myra, as well as 3 children: son, Jeff and daughter-in-law Dot of Gainesville, GA; daughter, Julie McIver and son-in-law Gregg of Lawrenceville, GA and daughter, Kristy Smith and son-in-law Paul Guerrucci of Atlanta, GA. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren: Katie (Chris), Ryan (Melissa), Kellyn (Ryan), Keegan (Mandy), Haley (Brett), and Chelsie. Also 12 great-grandchildren: Bella, Farrah, Hollis, Julianne, Smith, Remy, Lane, Aila, Connor, Scottie, and Jack Wyatt.

Jack loved everything about pirates, the beach, the movie Dumb and Dumber, dancing and his family. He will be missed.

The family will receive friends Thursday, December 5, 2019 from 10:00a - 12:00 noon at Lakeside Funeral Home, 121 Claremore Drive, Woodstock, GA 30188. A graveside service with military honors will be following at 1:00p at Green Lawn Cemetery, 950 Mansell Road, Roswell, GA 30076.
