Elaine Cooper Obituary

Elaine Lenore Cooper, age 91, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026 in Canton, GA. Her spirit lives on in heaven with God, our Savior Jesus Christ, and all her family and friends.

She was born May 3, 1934 in Johnstown, PA to the late Howard B. Shaffer and Florence M. (Edmiston) Shaffer.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 72 years, Lester Cooper “Bruce” and son David B. Cooper.

Elaine is survived by her daughters Kathleen Hoelzer (Steve); Diane Slaughter (James); granddaughters, Lauren and Kara Slaughter; daughter-in-law Leslie Cooper; sister Nancy Carthew; sister-in-law Loretta Brilhart and generations of extended family. 

Elaine always wanted to be a nurse from the time she was a young girl. She began her medical career in 1960 and became a Registered Nurse (R.N.) in 1968, till her retirement in 1994 from St. Lukes Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Not only was Elaine steadfast to treating and caring for people in her nursing career, she also had a deep commitment to her Christian faith. She was a member of the Brethren church in her youth and from early adulthood to later in life, she was a member of Methodist churches in OH and AZ. She sang most of her adult life in the church choir. She also became a  Stephen Minister in her retirement.

She had many hobbies and interests such as painting, macrame and quilting of which she became quite talented. She also explored various sports such as sharpshooting in her teens, later on snow skiing, karate, and bowling leagues. She was an avid golfer before and after retirement for many years.

Those who knew Elaine will remember her as someone who loved God, family, friends and a person who often showed kind-heartedness to almost anyone she interacted with. She will truly be  missed here on earth. Elaine will be laid to rest beside her husband Lester “Bruce” Cooper at Berkey Cemetery in Windber, Pennsylvania.

The family requests no flowers or gifts, rather in honor of Elaine do something positive or giving today for another person(s) or donate to the charity of your choice. You may also plant a tree in memory of Elaine.
