Barbara Lynn Mason Shisler, daughter of the late Wilbur S. and Alma M. Mason, passed away in her sleep on Saturday, June 3, 2023. Her battle with several medical issues the past year proved her strength and ability to face everyday challenges with a smile, determination, and humorous wit. You couldn’t meet her and not love her!
She is survived by three daughters, Heather Shisler (Shawn) of Land O’Lakes, Florida; Jessica Lee (John) of Milton, Georgia; and Megan Yancey (Eric) of Elkton, Virginia and her seven grandchildren, Caileigh, Eiler, Gavin, Anders, Cade, Jane Claire, and Hudson. Barbara is also survived by her sisters Sherry and Lori (Larry) and brother Gary (Sandy) as well as many nieces and nephews. Barbara was fortunate to also be surrounded by a close group of cousins and friends who enriched the quality of her life, both in sickness and in health. She is preceded in death by her brother Wayne Mason.
Barbara had a wonderful childhood growing up with her four siblings in Hillcrest Heights, Maryland right next door to her grandparents. She was raised in the Baptist church and attended four days a week. She attended Surrattsville High School and was in the Cheer Club, Spanish Honors Society and a member of Future Teachers of America. She worked her way through college at various government agencies like the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare while attending Towson University. Barbara graduated with a degree in Mathematics and a minor in Education. She had a fulfilling career teaching junior high honors algebra, being a fun and creative stay at home mom, and later as a subrogator and claims adjuster with Allstate Insurance. She was also trained and volunteered as a Rape Crisis Counselor. Her favorite past-times were sewing, reading, any type of game or crossword puzzle, and she and her sisters loved to meet up to play the slots. But her biggest passion was family.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Kidney Foundation in her memory.
A service to celebrate her life will be held on Friday, July 21, 2023 at 1 p.m., La Plata United Methodist Church in La Plata, Maryland.
